Have you noticed the little figures that our housekeepers are putting in your suite? Are you wondering what are they?
An Alebrije is a surreal Mexican craft that can be made of cardboard, paper or wood with different techniques for its modeling and creation. Traditional grandmas say it brings good luck to it’s owner.
The first alebrijes, along with use of the term, originated with Pedro Linares, in the 1930´s. The artist had a dream about rare animals that were shouting the word “alebrije” all together. So the next day he started to create them. His work caught the attention of artists like Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, whom started to paint the figures in their work. The rest is history.
Alebrijes can be made simulating invented or normal animals with the peculiar characteristic that must contain very picturesque and striking colors to the pure Mexican style. Some in their physiognomy may consist of a mixture of two or more animals, even animals with plants and still more, some imaginary beings conceived from the most creative side and brought to reality in the form of these precious figures.
If you happen to get one, don’t let him loose, an alebrije is a very slippery creature.
